We are delighted that our Wychwood garden has been featured in the March 2026 issue of Gardens Illustrated, celebrating the bold transformation that turned a conventional small plot into a relaxing retreat.
Working with an underused garden in Surrey that previously consisted of a small patio, patchy lawn and uninspiring borders, we turned things inside out. With the planting in the middle of the garden and the functional areas around the edges, wherever you sit, you’re looking over vignettes of beautiful planting. The former lawn is now a vibrant central garden filled with perennials, grasses and bulbs beneath multi-stem Rhus typhina, creating seasonal interest and a strong sense of enclosure. A bubbling water feature provides a focal point within the planting.
Through clever use of space, the garden has been designed for everyday living and entertaining. Gardens Illustrated highlighted how the design balances beauty and function in a small space: a balau deck outside the house leads to a clay paver dining terrace with pergola and barbecue, while a sunken seating area with a firepit offers a relaxed place to gather among the planting. A raised boardwalk connects these spaces to a cedar hot tub and gym building, creating a circular journey through the garden.
The result is a garden that combines strong structure with generous planting — transforming a once overlooked small space into a dynamic, multi-functional garden designed for year-round enjoyment.
